Green Roof Shelter Construction at Margam Country Park

Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council seeks a contractor to design and build a replacement green roof shelter at Margam Country Park's livestock hand-feeding station. The new structure will replace an existing 8m x 4.5m x 2.5m shelter and incorporate biodiverse wildflower planting to support local wildlife, improve air quality, and enhance the visitor experience. The project is part of the council's 'Local Places for Nature' initiative to combat climate change and address environmental challenges. Key requirements include: constructing a metal or timber shelter meeting GRO Code 2021 specifications; installing a concrete foundation to support the green roof's saturated weight; removing and reinstalling accessible handwashing facilities compliant with Building Regulations Part M and the Equality Act 2010; replacing approximately 8m of livestock fencing; providing pre-agreed native plant species and habitat features such as wood mounds and water areas; ensuring watertight construction and structural integrity; installing new bilingual signage; and delivering a 12-month maintenance programme including plant care and structure monitoring. All works must comply with Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, relevant British Standards, fire safety requirements (BS EN 13501-1), and health and safety legislation. The contractor must have proven experience in green infrastructure projects. Design work begins September 2026, with construction and planting scheduled for completion by 1 January 2027.
