    Brief

St George the Martyr Church, located at Queen Square, WC1N 3AH, is seeking a multidisciplinary design team led by an architect for the restoration and renewal of this historic Grade II* listed church. This project is part of a significant capital initiative supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, aimed at preserving the future of this beautiful building. Situated in London's Knowledge Quarter, St George the Martyr serves as a tranquil refuge amidst the city's hustle and bustle. Originally designed in 1706 and later enhanced by Nicholas Hawksmoor, with significant 19th-century contributions from Samuel Sanders Teulon, the church has been a vital part of the Bloomsbury community. Despite its active role in the community, the church is currently listed on Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register due to the partial collapse of its important Hawksmoor ceiling in 2018. This capital project presents a unique opportunity to restore the ceiling and undertake essential repairs to the church's historic structure, while also reimagining its role in a changing urban environment. The project aims to enhance underutilized interior spaces, improve accessibility and environmental sustainability, and create new facilities for community and commercial use. St George the Martyr invites architect-led, multidisciplinary teams to help realize this vision. The selected team will collaborate closely with the Parochial Church Council (PCC) throughout the development and delivery phases (RIBA Stages 1-7). The architect will serve as the Lead Consultant and Principal Designer, coordinating various sub-consultants, including structural and M&E engineers, access and fire consultants, acoustic and lighting specialists, and other relevant experts. The team will also assist in advising and procuring site surveys during the development phase.
