    Brief

The British Museum is seeking a Security Consultant to provide specialist expertise for the Western Range Programme, a major redevelopment of approximately 15,000m² (15% of the Bloomsbury site) comprising 10 interconnected historic buildings. The project involves reimagining galleries, creating state-of-the-art storage, and updating infrastructure for the Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Assyria collections while managing ongoing museum operations with over 6 million annual visitors. The Security Consultant will serve as the lead security advisor, working with the Client, Project Team, British Museum Security, and stakeholders including DOCOs, NaCTSO, NPSA, NCSC, and CTSA. The role spans multiple RIBA design and delivery stages (3-7) and includes: developing a comprehensive Project Security Strategy using ISO 31000 methodology; conducting threat, vulnerability, and risk assessments; providing technical design advice for access control, CCTV, intruder detection, and intercom systems; preparing blast mitigation assessments; supporting procurement of security contractors; assisting with installation, commissioning, and handover; and establishing performance benchmarks for operational systems. Key challenges include working within a heritage setting, constrained site conditions, restricted access, complex logistics, and coordinating multiple stakeholder requirements while protecting visitors, staff, and irreplaceable collections throughout construction. The project requires expertise in sensitive site security, heritage building constraints, and coordination with multiple government and security agencies. Interested suppliers must sign a non-negotiable confidentiality agreement to access tender documents.
