    Brief

The British Museum seeks an experienced ICT Consultant to provide specialist advice for the Western Range redevelopment programme. The Western Range comprises approximately 15,000m² of the Museum's estate, including 7,500m² of galleries housing Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Rome, and Ancient Assyria collections, plus 4,500m² of storage facilities. The project involves redesigning and upgrading 10 interconnected historic buildings while maintaining the Museum's operational continuity with over 6 million annual visitors. The ICT Consultant will serve as lead ICT advisor, working with the Client, Project Team, in-house Information Systems team, and stakeholders to develop a coordinated ICT strategy that supports operations during construction and beyond. Key responsibilities span multiple RIBA design stages: Stage 3: Develop a comprehensive ICT strategy including review of existing infrastructure, design principles balancing heritage sensitivity with operational robustness, communications infrastructure planning, network architecture, wireless coverage, server and data centre requirements, and coordination with security, MEP, and heritage consultants. Stage 4: Provide detailed technical design including schematics, equipment layouts, network topology plans, testing and commissioning outlines, ICT specifications for procurement, tender documentation support, and advice on temporary construction phase requirements. Procurement: Support contractor selection, establish budgets, review technical specifications, and participate in tender evaluation. Stage 5: Review contractor submittals and witness system commissioning to ensure compliance with specifications and design intent. Stages 6-7: Assist with handover documentation, asset management, and establish performance benchmarks for ongoing optimization. This is a complex heritage project requiring expertise in ICT infrastructure planning, listed building constraints, cultural institution operations, and sophisticated stakeholder coordination. Interested suppliers must execute a non-negotiable confidentiality agreement before accessing tender documents. Contact wr@britishmuseum.org to request the confidentiality agreement.
