    Brief

This PhD research opportunity aims to generate current, evidence-based data on in-flight physiological requirements for aircrew. Current UK Defence Standards rely on physiological data from the 1960s-1980s that no longer accurately reflect modern aircraft capabilities, operator characteristics, or advanced understanding of human physiology in flight environments. The successful researcher will conduct comprehensive studies to establish up-to-date respiratory requirements and evaluate human-machine interaction factors in aircraft breathing systems (ABS). This work will directly support the revision and validation of UK Defence Standards and inform the design and development of next-generation aircraft breathing systems that better meet the needs of modern military aviators. The research is ideal for candidates with expertise in respiratory physiology, human factors engineering, aerospace medicine, or related disciplines.
