Emergency Medical Services for Construction Workers

Sizewell C (SZC) is developing a new nuclear power station in Suffolk, modeled after the successful Hinkley Point C (HPC) project. A key feature of HPC was the establishment of a Nurse Led Occupational Health Service (Hinkley Health), which provided accessible health services to all construction personnel. SZC aims to implement a similar service, known as Sizewell Health, leveraging the lessons learned from HPC to minimize the impact on local health services due to the transient workforce. Sizewell Health will also collaborate with local educational institutions to enhance the training of students in health-related fields, offering on-site placements and mentorship opportunities. The service will evolve in scope and resources in line with the workforce's needs and site activities. The Occupational Health (OH) aspect will be managed by a different provider, necessitating strong collaboration to ensure seamless service delivery. The health service will focus on three key areas: preventing ill health, assessing fitness for work, and providing treatment services. The service provider is expected to be innovative and work closely with the SZC Occupational Health and Wellbeing Manager. On-site services will include: - First Aid and First Responder Emergency Care Level 3 (FREC3) training - A nurse-led treatment service for minor injuries and illnesses - General Practitioner (GP) services - Provision of commonly prescribed medications - 24/7 GP telephone support - Confidential health advice for work-related and personal health issues (including sexual health and substance misuse) - Additional clinical services as needed - Data collection on accidents and health issues - Emergency response capabilities on the construction site, including patient transfers to local NHS hospitals in coordination with the East of England Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST) - Procurement of necessary equipment for the service, which will become the property of Sizewell Health - An accessible IT system for maintaining health records in compliance with legal requirements, including data protection and cybersecurity standards.
