Modeling the Effects of Sand Wave Removal on Seabed Sediment Movement

This project seeks to develop numerical models to assess how removing sand waves affects near-bed sediment transport in marine environments. Cable routing applications often propose clearing sand waves through active sand wave fields, but limited understanding of the environmental consequences creates regulatory uncertainty, particularly near marine protected areas. By simulating hypothetical sand wave clearance scenarios, this research will determine whether such removal poses risks to designated sedimentary habitats and sediment pathways. The results will provide evidence-based guidance for evaluating cable routing proposals and support proportional environmental impact assessments, helping balance infrastructure development with marine ecosystem protection.
