Sustainable Management of Organic Soils in Road Construction

This contract seeks research and development services focused on sustainable practices for managing organic and organogenic soils in road construction. Organic soils are often considered unsuitable for construction and are frequently replaced and disposed of as waste. However, due to their significant organic content, they play a crucial role in carbon storage and should be preserved. The project aims to explore the reuse of excavated organic soils as construction materials, avoiding decomposition and associated settlement issues. It will evaluate various foundation methods, including consolidation techniques and elevated construction methods, comparing their suitability, greenhouse gas emissions, resource consumption, soil and groundwater protection, and costs. The goal is to develop solutions and criteria for geotechnical planning in road construction that promote climate-friendly and resource-efficient building practices. The research will be guided by relevant working groups and is intended to inform technical regulations in road construction.
