Demolition Works for Kurparkterrassen in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler

The Kurpark in Bad Neuenahr is a protected historical park that is part of the overall architectural complex of the spa district. It includes the thermal bath house, the Steigenberger Kurhotel, and the Kurhaussaal with a casino, forming the historical spa quarter of Bad Neuenahr. The Kurparkterrassen building, located at the southern edge of the park, is a two-story structure with a basement, built in 1972. It was severely damaged by the flooding disaster in July 2021, with a water level of 1.78 meters measured in the ground and first floors. Before the flood, the ground floor served as office space for Ahrtal Marketing GmbH (AMG) and as a temporary event space. The upper floor was used for meetings, courses, and storage, while the basement contained storage and social rooms. The flood also destroyed the existing technical building of the Großer Sprudel, leading to a temporary relocation of the fountain technology to the outdoor area, which is now planned to be integrated into the basement of the Kurparkterrassen building. To meet the new space requirements of AMG, a potential renovation with possible expansion was examined during the initial planning process. A cost comparison between renovation and new construction was conducted, concluding that renovation and expansion are more sustainable and economically viable, considering CO2 savings, the use of existing structures, and the preservation of the architectural concept. The Kurparkterrassen building will form a cohesive ensemble with the new Kurpark properties, designed to complement the new construction. This ensemble will be completed by restoring the former colonnade between the new Kurpark properties and the Kurparkterrassen building.
