Brief

The Bavarian State Office for the Environment (LfU) is responsible for monitoring wolves, lynxes, and bears (large predators) as well as otters. Genetic testing is often the only reliable method to confirm the presence of wolves and to identify individual wolves, lynxes, bears, or otters. Additionally, genetic identification of large predators is used to assess claims for compensation from the large predator compensation fund and may be relevant for issuing exception permits, such as for removal. For otters, genetic evidence is essential for determining local and statewide population densities, which can justify removals under the Bavarian Wildlife Management Act and contribute to the Habitats Directive report.
